IFRC: 28,000 Displaced in NK due to Flooding

An international relief agency says the recent downpours and flooding in North Korea have left an estimated 28-thousand people without homes.

According to figures by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, North Korean authorities believe 30 people have died or are missing and 89-hundred are displaced in the hardest hit South Hwanghae Province alone.

Based on its own estimates, the federation says 29-hundred homes were completely destroyed in the province's Cheongdan County and other areas resulting in 28-thousand displaced people.

North Korea's Korean Central Television reported Friday that farmlands were flooded and levees breached in many areas in Gaeseong near the North’s border with South Korea.

The Red Cross is soliciting countries for emergency relief supplies including cement and iron rods.
