An 18th century British map that labels the waters between South Korea and Japan as the “Sea of Korea” has been revealed for the first time in South Korea.

The map is included in the geographical dictionary that was published in Britain in 1760.

Revised editions were released for several decades and continued to use the term “Sea of Korea.”

A 1787 U.S. geographical dictionary and an 1835 Japanese map also show that similar terms were used to identify the "East Sea," as it is known by Koreans today.
