N.Korea Denies Firing Artillery in Cable

North Korea sent a cable to South Korea’s military claiming that the South had mistaken detonations used in construction work around South Hwanghae Province as artillery fire on Wednesday.

A Defense Ministry spokesman said the North Korean military sent the cable Thursday morning in the name of the North’s chief delegate for inter-Korean military talks. The ministry spokesman said the content was the same as the report on the Korean Central News Agency that morning.

The ministry spokesman said South Korea’s firing artillery in the Yellow Sea was a justifiable response upon a decision made by the officer on-site. The spokesman also said North Korea’s message is unreasonable, and does not merit a response each time it is issued.
