NK Shut Down Mobile Network for Foreigners

The Voice of America says that North Korea closed down year a cell phone network last year that was exclusively used by foreigners.

The U.S. broadcaster quoted a 2010 report from Egyptian telecom provider Orascom as showing that in the fourth quarter of last year, the North Korean government closed down a second-generation mobile operator it had owned and run since 2002.

The Egyptian company is now the sole telecom operator in North Korea. Orascom launched its exclusive mobile phone service in the communist state in 2008.

According to the report, North Korea did not elaborate on the name of the closed-down mobile company, but it is believed to be “Sun Net,” which was the only second-generation mobile company in North Korea since 2002.
