S.Korean Companies Calls for Dialogue over Assets at Geumgang

South Korean companies that have made investments in North Korea’s Mount Geumgang resort have urged Pyongyang to scrap plans to dispose the South Korean companies’ assets in the resort and instead seek dialogue.

An association of South Korean companies with vested interests in the resort called on both South and North Korean authorities on Monday to resolve the stalled tourism projects at Mount Geumgang. The association stressed that the project was pursued based on the spirit of reconciliation and cooperation.

The association also urged Hyundai Asan, which is South Korea’s main operator of the tours to the North, to step up efforts to resolve the matter.

The association is made up of some 30 companies that have made investments in the Mount Geumgang resort by signing deals with Hyundai Asan. Such companies reportedly suffered around 30 billion won in losses since the tours to the mountain resort were suspended in 2008.
