The government has asked China and Japan to refrain from investing in North Korea’s Mount Geumgang resort as the North is pushing to resume tourism there after seizing South Korean assets at the site.
A Unification Ministry official said that while at the UN World Tourism Organization General Assembly being held in Gyeongju, southeastern Korea, Culture, Sports, and Tourism Minister Choi Kwang-shik held one-on-one meetings with the Japanese and Chinese representatives on Monday and Tuesday.
Choi said during the meetings that North Korea’s unilateral seizing of South Korean property and preparations to resume tourism at the resort by using foreign investors is unjust.
A Unification Ministry official said there would be a third meeting for a task force team to address the Mount Geumgang tourism issue early next week. The meeting will evaluate diplomatic measures related to tourism at the resort and to monitor North Korea’s actions related to that, including trial run tour programs.
