US to Search for Remains of MIA/POW in N.Korea

The U.S. Defense Department will resume its search for the remains of U.S. troops who were missing in action or prisoners of war during the Korean War.

The U.S. based broadcaster said the searches will be held in four sessions from spring to fall next yar. It reported Carie Parker, a spokeswoman for the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office, recently attended a meeting between the U.S. and North Korea held in Bangkok on the issue of recovering the remains of the U.S. troops.

Parker told VOA in an interview that the U.S. held successful dialogue with the North regarding the recovery efforts and that discussions on technical aspects still need to be addressed. However, Parker said a schedule for future discussions has not been set.

The U.S. has excavated some two-hundred-20 remains during 33 recovery efforts since 1996. However, efforts were halted in 2005 over concerns for the safety of the excavation crews.
