'Not guilty of negligent manslaughter' was the verdict handed down for Sergeant Fernando Nino. A seven-member U.S. military jury handed down the verdict Wednesday afternoon after a two-day hearing. Nino along with Sergeant Mark Walker were charged with negligent homicide in the June 13th deaths of two teenage girls. In front of Camp Casey north of Seoul, Korean activists held protests earlier in the day demanding that the two men be tried in a South Korean court. In a closing statement, prosecutor Captain Sean Kilkenny said Nino wasn't paying attention and "did not use all means necessary" to avoid the deaths of Shim Mi-son and Shin Hyo-sun. Kilkenny said Nino did not notice soldiers in an oncoming Bradley fighting vehicle who were shouting and signaling at him to stop. He also said Nino had at least 10 seconds to stop the vehicle. But the defense lawyer said there was no evidence that Nino was not paying attention and that he had tried in vain to warn Walker through the vehicle's defective communication system. The two 14-year-olds were struck by the Bradley fighting vehicle which was on training in Dongducheon, north of Seoul in June.
