Two Korean Cultural Assets Nominated for UNESCO Intangible Heritage List

The Cultural Heritage Administration says two more Korean cultural assets will likely be added to the UNESCO list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The administration said South Korea recently sought to add six more Korean cultural assets to the list, and a nomination body at UNESCO chose two traditional Korean cultural practices—tightrope walking and the martial arts taekgyeon—for the list.

The two traditional Korean cultural properties will likely be inscribed on the list at the sixth session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The committee will meet in Bali, Indonesia from November 22nd to the 29th.

This year, countries around the world asked UNESCO to register a total 49 cultural assets to the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The reviewing body chose just 17 properties for inscription.
