The Ministry of Justice is contemplating a plan to suspend a visa-free travel accord.
If the decision becomes finalized, countries with the ratio of national aliens staying illegally in South Korea topping 70% will face suspension of visa-free travel to Korea.
The plan is a part of the ministry's effort to decrease the number of foreigners illegally reentering the country.
Currently, Thais and Bangladeshis have the highest illegal alien ratio of 80% and 84%, respectively.
Also being contemplated by the ministry is a plan to toughen requirements for visa applicants from China, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Mongolia, Vietnam and Uzbekistan which also show a high rate of illegal entrants in Korea.
The Foreign Ministry has been reluctant to accept the request due to protection of South Koreans overseas and attraction of foreign tourists to the country.
