Gov't to Expand State Subsidy to 3, 4 Year-Olds at Kindergartens

The government will seek to expand the beneficiaries of a monthly state subsidy to include three- and four-year-old children attending kindergartens and day care facilities.

The Education Ministry on Wednesday said that it will produce measures to increase state support by March of next year after consultation with related ministries.

The move comes after President Lee Myung-bak ordered to create a unified curriculum and expand the state subsidy for three- and four-year-old children at kindergartens and day care facilities.

Starting next year, the government will pay parents with five-year-old children at kindergartens and nursery schools a monthly subsidy of 200-thousand won, regardless of the household’s income.

The state subsidy will increase to 300-thousand won in 2016.
