North Korea held a massive memorial service for Kim Jong-il on Thursday and declared Kim Jong-un as the North's new leader.
Roughly 100-thousand people turned out for the service that was held at Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang.
The ceremony, which was broadcast live like Kim’s funeral ceremony on Wednesday, showed the late leader’s third son and successor Kim Jong-un standing at the center of a balcony at the Grand People’s Study House overlooking the square. Some of the officials seen standing with Kim at the balcony were Ri Yong-ho, Chief of the Korean People’s Army General Staff, Premier Choe Yong-rim, and People's Armed Forces Minister Kim Yong-chun.
The memorial service was officiated by top Workers’ Party secretary Choe Thae-bok and parliamentary chief, Kim Yong-nam, delivered a memorial address.
In the speech, Kim referred to Kim Jong-un as the North’s supreme leader who inherited his father’s ideology, leadership, character and courage.
