Colleges to Face Penalties for Poor Management of Foreign Students

Colleges that were found deficient in terms of managing foreign students will face restrictions issuing visas and not be able to accept new foreign students for an entire year.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced on Thursday that it surveyed 347 four-year universities and vocational colleges and designated 36 schools, or the bottom ten percent, insolvent in terms of management of foreign students.

The ministry said seventeen schools that scored at the very bottom will face restrictions issuing visas. The 17 schools include seven four-year colleges and ten two-year vocational colleges.

The schools facing penalties were found to have attracted foreign students indiscreetly without verifying qualifications. Many of the foreign students who enrolled at such schools dropped out or became illegal immigrants after the schools failed to provide assistance.
