North Korea Lauds New Leader in New Year's Address

North Korea emphasized loyalty to its new leader Kim Jong-un in its New Year’s address on Sunday.

Official state media said Kim Jong-il’s wishes would be upheld in building a strong and prosperous nation through ‘songun’ or military first policies.

North Korea’s New Year’s address was published in three state media, including Rodong Sinmun, the official mouthpiece of the state’s powerful Workers’ Party.

In the address, the North’s military and the party were urged to strengthen the unilateral leadership coming down from Kim Jong-un. Emphasis was also given to the agricultural and light industries to bolster the country’s economy.

Pyongyang also demanded U.S. troops pull out of the South in its address for the first time in five years. The June 15 and October 4 agreements between the North and South were also mentioned as Pyongyang criticized Seoul for limiting visitors to Kim Jong-Il’s funeral.
