Gov’t to Designate Sports Relics as Cultural Assets

The government will designate as cultural assets sports relics won by late marathon hero Sohn Kee-chung during the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and other historical athletic items.

The Cultural Heritage Administration issued an advance notice on the registration of eight valuable athletic relics as cultural assets to mark the 100th anniversary of Sohn's birth and the 2012 London Olympic Games.

The eight relics include Sohn’s gold medal, award, and laurel wreath. The uniforms of a South Korean team that competed in the 1948 London Olympics and the victory trophy Korea won in the inaugural Asian Cup soccer match held in Hong Kong in 1956 will be registered as well.

The registration will be finalized after a 30-day notice period and a review by the Cultural Heritage Administration’s committee.
