A South Korean civic committee dedicated to implementing the June 2000 joint inter-Korean declaration says its members met their North Korean counterparts in Shenyang, China last Thursday through Saturday.
The committee says it proposed holding an inter-Korean event at North Korea's Mount Geumgang resort this year to mark the 12th anniversary of the 2000 summit declaration.
In a media release on Sunday, the committee also said the North Korean committee will likely accept the proposal.
The committee says it also told North Korea that for the event to be held at Mount Geumgang, dialogue and cooperation between the two Korean governments is necessary in order to resume South Korean tours to the mountain resort.
North Korea reportedly responded that late North Korean leader Kim Jong-il had promised safety guarantees for South Korean tourists during talks with South Korea's Hyundai Group chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun in August 2009.
In that regard, the North said the resumption of tours to Geumgang should be discussed between Hyundai Asan and the North's Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee.
