Seoul Education Office Announces Measures on School Violence

The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education has announced a set of comprehensive measures to eradicate and prevent school violence.

The measures increase principals’ and teachers’ responsibility for and authority on handling school violence and enhancing human rights education and cultural activities at school.

The office on Monday said that the measures enable headmasters to immediately suspend bullies from school as well as assign an additional teacher to classes with an excessive number of students so that students vulnerable to violence can be given more attention.

The education office will also provide students with classes on nonviolence based on the content of an ordinance protecting student human rights. Meanwhile, it will give teachers proper training on human rights so that the subject can be taught as part of the school curriculum.

In addition, the office plans to introduce various athletic and cultural activities, such as a family sports day or plays, to encourage students to prevent and actively deal with school violence and game addiction.
