Athletes caught match-fixing will now be subject to a zero-tolerance policy, and whistle blowers will be rewarded for reporting offenders.
The Sports Ministry held a joint meeting Tuesday with the Education Ministry, the Korea Communications Commission, the police and eight sports-related organizations.
In the meeting, the ministry announced a set of measures to foster a fair and transparent sports environment.
It said anyone involved in match-fixing will be stripped of their position and kicked off their team. They will also serve a maximum five-year sentence or will pay fines up to 50 million won.
The ministry explained the clubs the offending athletes play for will suffer from reduced financial support or expulsion from their league. They will also be required to teach match-fixing prevention training four times a year.
To encourage whistle blowing on match fixers, rewards of up to 100 million won will be offered.
