North Korea and the United States have resumed high-level talks four months after official dialogue was stalled following the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il.
The North’s delegation led by chief nuclear negotiator Kim Kye-gwan and the U.S. delegation under special representative for North Korea policy Glyn Davies held a closed-door meeting at the North Korean embassy in Beijing on Thursday morning to discuss issues such as Pyongyang’s nuclear facilities.
The two delegations moved to the U.S. embassy in Beijing in the afternoon to exchange opinions on the North’s preliminary measures for denuclearization and America’s food aid program.
The high-level talks were at the center of media attention, as they marked the first talks to be held between the two nations since power was transferred to Kim Jung-un.
Chinese local media reported that the U.S. demanded North Korea to halt its uranium enrichment program and allow inspection of its nuclear facilities, adding that the latest meeting will serve as a watershed event for a possible resumption of the six party talks.
