Parliament Adopts Resolution to Stop Forced Repatriation of N. Koreans

The National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee has adopted a resolution opposing the forced repatriation of North Korean escapees in China.

The resolution passed Friday denounces the Chinese government’s move to forcibly send the escapees back to their homeland. The measure also calls for the Chinese government to change its position and urges the cooperation of the international community and the National Assembly.

The resolution demands the Chinese government comply by the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and consider the political oppression and torture North Korean defectors could face once home. It also calls on the UN and other international organizations to take a strong position against China so it doesn't repatriate North Koreans back to Pyongyang.

The measure further states that the National Assembly will do its best to support the North Koreans so they can travel safely and quickly into South Korea.
