Saturday Class Participation Grows With 5-Day School Week

More elementary, middle, and high school students nationwide have participated in the second week of Saturday programs offered by their schools.

The education ministry said 13.4 percent of elementary, middle and high school students nationwide participated in extracurricular activities on March 10.

A total of roughly 935-thousand-900 students participated in the Saturday programs on March 10, up from last week’s 618-thousand 200.

The five-day work week was implemented at most of the schools nationwide on the first week of March. In lieu of classes, schools are offering other extracurricular programs, such as extra help with school work, field trips, and sports.

Participation rates were highest in North Gyeongsang Province at 33.6 percent, followed by 21.3 percent in Daegu, 20.9 percent in Busan and Incheon at 10.7 percent.

Seven percent of underage students each participated from the Seoul and the Gyeonggi Province area.
