The Ministry of Construction and Transportation said Tuesday North Korea is said to be building a dam on the main tributary of the Imjin River named "Hwangkang Dam" able to hold from 300 million tons to 400 million tons of water. The ministry said the North started to build the dam while conducting talks with the South on p on preventing flood damage from the overflow of the river. The North apparently is building tunnels and the foundation of the projected dam. In a report, the ministry said North Korea is building the dam some 42.3 km north of the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and ultimately will let the water flow into the Yeseong River allowing it to supply water to generate electricity for the proposed Kaesong industrial complex. The ministry said the North could also cause a large flood in the downstream areas of the river in the South. The ministry said it will consult with the North at a meeting on the prevention of flood damage from the Imjin River, scheduled to be held in Seoul next month.
