The United States says it is consulting with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over North Korea's invitation to have agency inspectors visit its nuclear facilities.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Wednesday morning, Korea time, that the department saw reports that the IAEA confirmed it was formally invited to go to the North to observe the suspension of the North's uranium enrichment program.

Nuland said the IAEA is considering the offer and has not decided what it will do.

Asked if Washington wants the IAEA to accept the North’s invitation, the spokeswoman said she is not going to get ahead of the agency’s decision-making or brief on private discussions the department held with the IAEA.

Nuland added the U.S. concerns lie with whether the North Korean regime is trustworthy and will keep its word.
