UN Secretary-General to Raise North Korea's Rocket Launch at NSS

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed “deep concern” over North Korea’s plans to launch its Kwangmyongsong-3 satellite, saying he will raise the issue at the Seoul Nuclear Security Summit next week.

Secretary-General Ban told a press conference in Malaysia that he will discuss North Korea’s planned rocket launch with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and other leaders who are attending the summit.

Ban said Pyongyang’s satellite launch will be “a clear violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 1874, adding that it “threatens the peace and security in the Korean peninsula.”

Adopted after North Korea’s missile and nuclear tests in 2009, UN Security Council Resolution 1874 prohibits Pyongyang from any type of launch using ballistic missile technology.
