Venerable Jinje Named New Chief of Jogye Order

The nation’s largest Buddhist sect Jogye Order has held a ceremony to name Venerable Jinje as its new chief.

In Seoul on Wednesday, Buddhist officials and various figures attended the ceremony held at Jogye Temple, the headquarters of the Buddhist sect.

Venerable Jinje presented “the reunification of South and North Korea” as a key issue of the age, saying that the two Koreas could be reunited by practicing nonviolence and mercy.

The 13th chief of the Jogye order was born in 1934 in Namhae, South Gyeongsang Province and founded Haeunjeong Temple in 1971.
