The U.S. Defense Department says it is keeping a close eye on North Korea as it apparently prepares to launch a long-range rocket as early as next week.

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said Thursday the U.S. has the means available to track very closely what is going on in North Korea. He added the U.S. considers the North’s planned rocket launch a very serious matter.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said the U.S. is exerting various efforts to convey to North Korea that the launch goes against international agreements.

Carney said the U.S. has repeatedly warned the North that it would become impossible to provide food aid if it launches the rocket.
