Gov't to Publish Book on N. Korea Human Rights Violations

The National Human Rights Commission will publish a book early next month on cases of North Korea's human rights violations.

The commission said Monday that the book is based on stories that its North Korean human rights center received from North Korean escapees over the past year. The center began services in March of 2011.

The book summarizes the interviews of some 60 North Korean escapees selected from roughly 830 escapees who reported their stories to the center.

In the book, the commission also described the state of affairs of four political prison camps and two prisons in the communist state.

Also on Monday, the commission unveiled a list of 278 North Koreans who were or are confined in political prison camps.

The commission said the book is significant in that it can be used as key material in efforts to improve the North’s human rights situation and as an educational material for future generations. The commission stressed that, in particular, the book can be used as a means for human rights violation victims to seek compensation after the two Koreas are reunited.
