US House Supports Nuclear Weapons on Korean Peninsula

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act on Friday that recommends the U.S. redeploy tactical nuclear weapons in East Asia including the Korean Peninsula.

The recent measure is non-binding, but experts say it reflects the Republican Party's efforts to make the Obama administration take a firmer stance against the North Korean nuclear threat.

The U.S. Defense Department said Monday that the U.S.’s denuclearization policy regarding the Korean Peninsula remains unchanged, and the redeployment of tactical nuclear weapons is unnecessary.

The U.S. withdrew tactical nuclear weapons from the Korean Peninsula under George H.W. Bush in 1991 following its declaration to reduce nuclear weapons. But calls for redeployment are emerging from both South Korea and the U.S. after North Korea’s recent provocation.
