The first U.S. citizen has been extradited to South Korea under a 1999 agreement between the two countries. The U.S. Embassy said in a press release Tuesday that Kenzi Noris Elizabeth Sinder arrived in Seoul Friday to face charges in a Korean court. She is accused of the murder of American student Jamie Lynn Penich, which happened in Seoul in March, 2001. Sinder is currently being questioned at Yongsan Police Station and will remain in the custody of Korean authorities until the completion of judicial procedures. The investigation into this case and the arrest and extradition of Ms. Sinder was the result of extensive cooperation and coordination between the U.S. and Korean law enforcement agencies. The United States and South Korea signed an extradition treaty in June 1998, which went into effect December 20 the following year. A date for trial has not yet been set.
