Remains of a field from the Neolithic Period have been found at a historic site in Goseong, Gangwon Province, showing that farming did exist on the Korean Peninsula during the New Stone Age.

The National Cultural Properties Research Institute said on Tuesday that researchers discovered tracks of a field from the Neolithic times at the ruins while examining the sites.

The institute said that stone tools and carbonized grains were discovered before, but this is the first discovery of field remains from the era, concrete evidence that agriculture existed in the New Stone Age.

The institute added that among relics of ancient fields found in South Korea, those from the Bronze Age have been the oldest so far, and that the newly discovered field remains is presumed to be from the middle years of the New Stone Age.
