Fossilized Remains Desginated as Natural Monument

The Cultural Heritage Administration says it has designed fossilized remains of a theropod dinosaur nest as Natural Monument No. 535.

The remains, found in 2009 at the construction site of the Aphae Bridge in Sinan, South Jeolla Province, are currently housed at Mokpo Natural History Museum.

At two-point-three meters in diameter, 60 centimeters high and a weight of three tons, the fossils are the largest of their kind ever found in South Korea. The nest also holds remains of 19 dinosaur eggs.

The administration said on Wednesday that the fossilized remains are in a good state of preservation and thus will be very important for the study of carnivorous dinosaurs that lived on the Korean Peninsula during the late Cretaceous period.
