The National Police Agency says it has set up an official hot line with the United States Forces in Korea to facilitate exchange of information. The move comes after two teenage girls were run over by a mine- clearing vehicle manned by U.S. soldiers in June. The subsequent acquittal of the servicemen involved has led to nationwide demonstrations and demands to revise the status of forces agreement. Police sources said the hot line was needed to effectively handle growing number of protest around U.S. military installations, and speed up the reaction time in case of clashes. A police spokesman said eight provincial police headquarters have also established hot lines with U.S. military bases in their jurisdictions. He also said U.S. military authorities in Seoul requested the move in light of security concerns.
