FM Urges Caution in Reading Changes in NK Reports

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan has urged caution when interpreting the recent changes in reports on North Korea.

Kim told a meeting of ministry officials on Monday that the government should closely watch and determine whether the recent changes shown in reports on the North are signs true in nature or are just planned images.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was recently seen watching a performance by the North’s Moranbong band, which played the theme song to an American movie, “Rocky.” Major Disney characters, including Mickey Mouse, were also seen in the show.

The minister reportedly said that while Seoul should not downplay the signs of change in the North, the South should not just focus on the reported images but should also be cautious.

A senior foreign ministry official also called for a cautious approach, saying there are no specific signs clearly showing that the North has shifted to reforms and an open-door policy.
