The South Korean government has decided to strengthen multicultural education to raise awareness of cultural diversity among the general public.
During a national policy-setting meeting chaired by Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik on Friday, the government said next year it will include material in elementary textbooks and provide kindergarten teachers with guidelines to improve understanding about a multicultural society.
The government will also devise guidelines for teachers so that they can better manage grades and lifestyles of children from multicultural families and consult them more effectively. It also decided to develop a program that will connect local communities with multicultural families.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Kim said he enjoys watching the KBS TV program “Love in Asia,” and he encouraged ministers of government agencies to watch it as well in order to raise their level of understanding of multiculturalism.
“Love in Asia” documents the lives of multicultural families with a focus on foreign women who moved to Korea after marrying a South Korean man. The program airs every Tuesday evening on KBS 1TV.
