EU, UN to Support Flood-Stricken N. Korea

Radio Free Asia reports that the European Union is said to have provided 200-thousand euros to the International Federation of the Red Cross and other organizations to support flood-stricken North Korea.

According to a report released by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid & Civil Protection on Wednesday, the EU provided 52 million euros to ten East Asian nations that suffered natural disasters, including 200-thousand euros to North Korea in July and August.

The UN World Food Program also plans to release a report at the end of the year by working hand in hand with Pyongyang from next Tuesday to look into nutritional conditions of children under the age of five and women in the North.

This is the first time in three years that the UN will investigate nutritional conditions of North Korean children since 2009. In 2009, it was found that 19 percent of children under five in North Korea were underweight.
