A newly discovered document details Korea's defense posture around Ganghwa Island in the mid-19th century just before the island was invaded by the French.

Dongguk University's Academy of Buddhist Studies held a news conference Tuesday and unveiled the document that includes information on weapons and war supplies at the island in 1854 prior to the French invasion known as "Byeong-in-yang-yo" in Korean.

The document is very detailed and includes the volume of gunpowder, rifles and cannons deployed on the island as well as the number of temples, monasteries and even the number of pots found at the temples.

The document is regarded a valuable military record shedding light on the island's overall defenses at the time.

The academy says the record is highly essential as it provides a glimpse into the Joseon Dynasty's military advancement and its defense capability against foreign powers around the time of the 1866 French invasion of Ganghwa.
