N. Korea Rejects S. Korea's Flood Relief Aid Offer

North Korea has turned down South Korea’s offer to provide flood relief aid.

A Unification Ministry official said Thursday that Pyongyang sent a message on Wednesday, saying it did not need assistance from Seoul.

North Korea was replying to the South’s proposal to swiftly send medical supplies and flood relief items, including ten-thousand tons of flour and three million instant noodles worth ten billion won. The South Korean government made its offer via the Red Cross channel in the truce village of Panmunjeom on Tuesday.

The North apparently turned down the proposal in protest of the type and amount of relief supplies offered. On Monday, the North requested that the list of items and their quantity be provided before it decides whether to accept the South’s offer of aid.

The ministry official said Seoul deeply regrets Pyongyang’s refusal, noting the South was hoping to help North Korean people hit by the floods with the aid. The official added that the government conveyed in another message to the North on Tuesday that it was willing to hold consultations on additional items the North was hoping to receive.

The official said the South will continue to engage in existing humanitarian aid projects.
