Methodist Church to Ban Family Leadership Succession

Written: 2012-09-26 09:14:21Updated: 2012-09-26 17:43:03

The Korean Methodist Church has passed a new rule prohibiting head ministers from transferring power to their children or their children’s spouses.

The rule was passed with 245 out of 390 key members of the church voting in favor of the ban on power transmission. One-hundred-38 voted against the rule and seven either abstained or their votes were invalidated.

The latest move comes after several leading Methodist churches came under criticism when their head ministers passed on their leadership to their sons. The new rule will go immediately into effect.

The Methodist Church’s decision is likely to affect other Protestant orders.
