The National Red Cross in South Korea said on Monday it would soon make educational material on Korean history available for North Korean defectors.
A Red Cross official said the organization will be publishing three-thousand copies of the educational textbooks this month to help North Korean defectors learn about Korean history with ease. This will be the first time a separate history textbook is made just for North Korean defectors.
The official also said the Red Cross had developed the idea for a separate textbook for the defectors as they have had difficulties understanding the history textbooks currently being used in South Korea. North Korean defectors are usually taught Korean history after they start their new lives in the South through learning material made for junior high school students.
The textbook, “Korean History for North Korean Defectors,” will be put together by the Ewha History Research Institute at Ewha Womans University. The book will concentrate more on the social and cultural details in Korean history rather than focusing on political issues.
