A government source says one of two South Koreans recently arrested in China for helping North Korean escapees has been released.

Chinese security police detained the two on charges of assisting North Koreans illegally cross the border into China.

The released individual is known to have been less involved in assisting North Koreans.

The Caleb Mission church in South Korea said on March 12 that the two South Koreans arrested were former North Korean escapees. It said they were arrested in Yanji, China on March 9.

The church said eight North Korean escapees were arrested with the activists and sent to a prison in the town of Tumen and could be repatriated to North Korea.

The North Koreans are still believed to be at a detention facility.
