A domestic research team has developed a world-class Korean-English automatic translation application for smartphones.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said on Wednesday that its researchers developed “GenieTalk,” a smartphone application that translates speakers’ words into English or Korean.

GenieTalk’s automatic translation is known to be 80 percent accurate and contains 270-thousand Korean words and 65-thousand English words. The app is reportedly better than Google’s Korean-English translation application by more than 15 percent.

The institute plans to promote the app to domestic and foreign tourists in cooperation with the Korea Tourism Organization and provide a similar automatic translation service for eight languages including Chinese and Japanese by 2018.
