A gala ceremony to honor the first Korean immigrants to America and a variety of cultural performances will be held Monday in Hawaii. The ceremony, scheduled to open at 9:30 a.m. at the Hilton Hotel, follows the dedication of a centennial monument Sunday at Pawaa Park in Honolulu, which drew some 200 well-known figures including South Korean Gender Equality Minister Han Myung-sook and National Assembly speaker Park Kwan-yong. Speaking at the ceremony, Donald C. W. Kim, chairman of the Centennial Committee of Korean Immigration to the United States, asked all Korean-Americans to honor the pioneer spirit of their forefathers. Some 2,000 Korean residents in the United States and Japan and a navy brass band from South Korea joined a parade to Kapiolani Park after the ceremony.
