Temporary School Workers to Stage General Strike on Friday

Nonregular workers of national and public schools throughout South Korea will stage a general strike on Friday.

Three unions of nonregular school employees say that 74 percent of their members voted to approve a general strike plan with 91 percent supporting the strike. The voting began on October 23rd and the counting of votes was completed on Wednesday morning.

The labor unions are demanding the introduction of a seniority-based pay system and a job-security guarantee from education superintendants. The unions have been in talks with the Education Ministry and municipal and provincial education offices over their demand.

Thirty-five-thousand out of roughly 150-thousand temporary school workers are unionized. Most of the unionized nonregular workers are staffers of school kitchens and cafeterias. The planned strike is feared to disrupt the provision of school lunches on Friday.
