The Korea Embassy in the United States said Sunday about 66 percent of pre-19th century atlases containing maps of Northeast Asia housed in the U.S. Library of Congress describe the disputed waters between Korea and Japan as the "East Sea" or "Sea of Korea. The embassy& 039 s Korean cultural center said its recent study found that the expression "Sea of Japan" appeared in only 14 of the 228 books examined, while the "East Sea" or "Sea of Korea" description appeared in 68 books. Three of the atlases adopted the "Sea of Korea/Sea of Japan" term, while several others used "Sea of China" or "Sea of Manchuria." The embassy said that 125 of the 228 books contained no description of the waters, which have generally been known as the Sea of Japan since the first edition of the International Hydrographic Organization maritime atlas was published in 1929. At that time, Korea was under Japanese colonial rule.
