Gaeseong Businesses Seek Stability, Normalization Measures

South Korean businesses operating within the joint Gaeseong industrial complex in North Korea held emergency meetings on Sunday to find measures to stabilize business amid tensions with North Korea.

The Corporate Association of Kaesong Industrial Complex said companies have been organizing details regarding financial damage from the shutdown as well as other issues the South Korean government has requested.

The association plans to create future measures alongside the government by forming an emergency group on Monday after determining how much damage companies have sustained.

About 50 South Koreans who stayed behind in Gaeseong for electric and communications support will leave the zone on Monday.

The South Korean government said there is no change to their basic stance that the normalization of Gaeseong should be reached through talks. Seoul has urged North Korea to take proactive and responsible measures regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, North Korea has strongly criticized South Korea’s decision to withdraw its workers from the zone and said Seoul would be to blame if the complex is shut down permanently.

North Korea’s state media cited the spokesperson of the management bureau of Gaesong in the North as saying the complex’s future has reached a critical point. However, Pyongyang has refrained from stating a permanent shutdown of Gaeseong as of Sunday.
