The interim head of the main opposition Democratic United Party (DUP) has proposed a meeting with President Park Geun-hye to discuss the troubled Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
Chairman Moon Hee-sang held a news conference at the National Assembly on Monday and said he wishes to meet with Park before she heads to the U.S. next month. Moon said he hopes to hold earnest talks with the president on ways to overcome the crisis at the industrial park and usher in peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Moon stressed that the Gaeseong complex is the symbol of inter-Korean peace, cooperation and reconciliation as well as the last dialogue channel between the two Koreas. He said that closing the industrial park would be an irreversible catastrophe for both Koreas.
During a meeting of the DUP’s emergency leadership committee, DUP Floor Leader Park Ki-choon also stressed the need for both Koreas to refrain from saying things or acting in a way that further exacerbates the situation surrounding the industrial park.
Moon's remarks come after the government announced last Friday that it was withdrawing all South Korean workers from the inter-Korean complex. The government said the pullout is an unavoidable option for the South.
