All but seven South Korean workers came back home around midnight on Monday from the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea.
Following the North's consent to allow 43 of the 50 remaining South Koreans to return home Monday night, Seoul’s Unification Ministry official explained that the seven will have to remain in the factory park in order to resolve issues related to the South’s outstanding balance to the North.
The official explained that most of the outstanding amount is South Korean companies’ wage payment to North Korean workers, and the seven remaining will return home when the two sides agree on details on the issue.
The remaining seven include five members of the Gaeseong Industrial District Management Committee and two employees of South Korean telecommunications service provider KT.
The Unification Ministry official said that it is unlikely that they will return home on Tuesday, suggesting that it will take more than a day to resolve the issue.
The official said that the South will pay the due while demanding what it is entitled to although the North is responsible for the current suspension of the joint inter-Korean business venture.
Initially, all 50 South Korean workers remaining in the complex were scheduled to return home at 5 p.m. on Monday, however, the cross-border trip was delayed as the North did not give its consent for the trip.
