The ruling Saenuri Party and the government held their first task force meeting at the National Assembly Wednesday to discuss the situation at the troubled Gaeseong Industrial Complex.
The two sides addressed ways to normalize the inter-Korean business park and to support South Korean firms based at the complex.
The Saenuri Party's deputy chief policy-maker Chung Moon-hun called on the government to place priority on drafting compensation measures for the companies following the tentative shutdown of the complex.
Another deputy chief policy-maker Yeo Sang-kyoo said talks currently taking place in Gaeseong on outstanding payments to the North may hopefully lead to inter-Korean dialogue. He stressed that the supply of water and electricity for Gaeseong citizens must never be cut off.
Saenuri Representative Kim Jong-hoon said discussions on providing compensation for the firms should be based on the premise of seeking to normalize complex operations.
He said if the normalization is expected to take time, the option of alternative production facilities should be considered.
