S. Korea Pays N. Korea $13 Million for Gaeseong, Demands Reopening of Communication Channels

The South Korean government said it paid North Korea 14-point-two billion won, or 13 million U.S. dollars, in what Pyongyang called unpaid fees, via a working-level official meeting over the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

North Korea demanded seven-point-three million dollars in unpaid wages for its workers in March, four million dollars in corporate income taxes for 2012, as well as other fees such as communications and waste disposal worth around one-point-seven million dollars, a unification ministry official said.

North Korea also demanded one-point-two million dollars in wages for April, but the South Korean government did not pay it, and will discuss the demand at a later time.

The South Korean government also demanded that the North resume the communication channels at Panmunjom and the military communication channel for future negotiations.
