Ruling Saenuri Party Chairman Hwang Woo-yea has called for patience until it's confirmed whether North Korea is sincere about returning to the six-party nuclear talks.
In a Saenuri Party Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly Monday, Hwang said there have been attempts for dialogue within the international framework but resuming the six-way talks is not yet determined.
He said until that point, South Korea should remain prudent and prepare for all possible developments.
Hwang noted that major turning points related to the North Korea nuclear issue will be the U.S.-China summit early next month and the South Korea-China summit at the end of June.
He said rival parties should remain united to support the government ahead of these events.
Regarding normalizing operations at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea, Hwang said his party's consistent stance is that complex operations must swiftly resume regardless of the nuclear issue. He asked the government to provide sufficient compensation for South Korean firms who operated in the complex and to do its best to get the business park up and running again.
